UVA received digital copies of all the books that were scanned from our library, and we deposited the scans in Hathitrust for long term preservation and research access. Materials in HathiTrust fall more or less into three categories:

  • Materials that are freely available in full text online.
  • Materials that are only available to faculty, staff and students at HathiTrust member institutions.  UVA is a member library.
  • Materials that are not available in full text either on Google or in HathiTrust due to copyright issues. Many materials published after 1923 would fall into this restrictive category and you will probably need to use the printed copies of these books. (Full policy explanation available here: https://www.hathitrust.org/help_copyright#RestrictedAccess)

UVA also retained copies of our scans for archival purposes, but these are not currently publicly accessible.
