Yes, you can eat and drink in the library! We ask that your food is neat, low-scent, quiet, and that you pick up after yourself.

Our policy reads:

  • Food and drinks, within reason, are permitted in many Library locations. However, Library users are expected to be considerate of others and to avoid messy, smelly, or noisy food items.

  • Food and drinks are prohibited at microform workstations, specialized audio and video equipment, or other equipment susceptible to damage.

  • Cans, bottles, containers, wastepaper, and suitable items should be recycled in the proper receptacles. All other trash is to be disposed of properly.

Special Collections is the exception. All food and drink, including water, must be left outside of the Special Collection's Reading Room. A table is provided at the entrance for leaving water bottles and other items.

Some library study areas have been designated as quiet areas. Library users are always expected to be considerate of others. Usually, the further you get from an entrance, the quieter that space will be. Look out for signage that says what the noise level norms are for that area, when available.
